CATEC Welcomes Aerospace Engineering Students to Showcase NATURE-DEMO Project

On May 15th, CATEC welcomed a group of students from the Aerospace Engineering Degree and Aerospace Industry Diploma programs at Loyola University Andalusia to its headquarters in Seville. The visit was coordinated by Professor Juan Carlos Meléndez Rodríguez and aimed to provide students with insights into CATEC’s activities, technological capabilities, and research infrastructure.

The participants attended a presentation showcasing CATEC’s innovative facilities, services, and several of our most relevant R&D initiatives, including the NATURE-DEMO project, in which CATEC is a project partner.
NATURE-DEMO aims to create, validate, and scale Nature-based Solutions (NbS) to improve the climate resilience of critical infrastructures across Europe. Within this initiative, CATEC plays a key role in monitoring and assessing implemented solutions across different European regions by applying expertise from the aerospace sector, including advanced UAV technologies, precision monitoring, and technical systems integration.

During the visit, Gabriela Cáceres presented the NATURE-DEMO project, introducing the technologies being used within the initiative, including UAV platforms, multispectral cameras, and the L3 LiDAR system. The presentation also showcased preliminary results from monitoring activities conducted across different demonstrator sites, providing students with practical insights into how advanced aerospace technologies are being applied to environmental monitoring and climate resilience solutions.

  • Bioswales: green channels that slow the flow

Bioswales are a linear rainwater run-off retention system designed as a shallow, gently sloping non-concrete channel (allowing for water infiltration). This system basically captures, retains and slowly releases the water run-off and direct rainwater into a conventional piping drainage system and/or the air (evapotranspiration) and soil (infiltration) media.

  • Rain gardens: turning autumn rain into an ally

Autumn brings long spells of rain, and with them come flooded streets, blocked drains and overloaded sewers. In a city covered by asphalt, rooftops and paving, rainwater has nowhere to soak in, so it rushes towards the drainage network all at once. Rain gardens offer a simple, attractive and evidence-based alternative.
