Zvolen, Slovakia

Zvolen town, with citizens of 41,750, is situated in the central Pohronie region in the southwestern part of the Zvolen basin, at the confluence of the Hron and Slatina rivers, into which the Zolná and Neresnica rivers flow. The altitude in the centre is 293 m above sea level. It is an important road and railway crossway. There is nearby also the Sliač airport. The town is industrial and only marginally agricultural, with the industrial potential ranking at the top of the region.

For Zvolen town territory, there are typical 3 types of emergencies which intensity will increase as a consequence of ongoing climate change and which also will have negative impact on critical infrastructure. TUZVO and DHZ Zvolen are demonstrators of wildfire nature-based solutions and replicator of flooding nature-based solutions. Besides those solutions they will demonstrate and continuously monitor also the landslide nature-based solutions.

Those demonstrated emergencies and solutions implemented:

  • Wildfire (Pusty hrad hill locality) – Site 1
  • Landslides (Pusty hrad hill territory) – Site 2
  • Flooding (Teplarenska Holding area) – Site 3 and Site 4: Flash flood with disruption of water reservoir with waste water and with dangerous substance contamination

Preventive, mitigation, recovery and adaptation nature-based measures/solutions will be selected from the catalogue of NbS, which will be elaborated in the framework of the project (WP1), then implemented and continuously monitored for all above mentioned emergencies. We expect to implement not only green and blue but also grey solutions to increase the resilience of critical infrastructure and local communities to climate change consequences.

Among the stakeholders involved in demonstration preparing, implementation and monitoring belong Technical University in Zvolen, DHZ Zvolen, Zvolen municipality – town representatives and civil protection employee, District Office in Zvolen – State Administration Authority (Department of Civil Protection), LPM Zvolen, SVP š.p., branch Zvolen, ŽSR, a.s., branch Zvolen, NDS, a.s. branch Zvolen, OR HaZZ vo Zvolene (professional firefighters).
