Work Package 1

Design and landscape the nature-based solutions

WP1 provides the knowledge base and framework for integrating Nature-based Solutions (NbS) into infrastructure planning and climate change adaptation. This involves the identification, analysis, and cataloging of NbS relevant to infrastructure protection across diverse climates and environments, focusing initially on the Alpine region. WP1 is creating a catalogue of suitable NbS, which will provide information about how specific solutions perform in protecting infrastructure against particular climate hazards, as well as their ecosystem benefits and co-benefits such as biodiversity support and water management.

Central to WP1 is also the development of a selection methodology that enables infrastructure stakeholders to identify suitable NbS for specific contexts based on multiple criteria, including technical requirements, environmental impact, and socio-economic factors. This methodology will be incorporated into digital tools developed in WP2, to pinpoint optimal sites for deploying NbS solutions. In collaboration with stakeholders and local authorities, WP1 will also organize workshops to gather feedback and refine NbS selection criteria, ensuring the solutions are practical and effective for real-world applications. Ultimately, WP1 lays the groundwork for mainstreaming NbS as a key approach to safeguarding infrastructure within climate adaptation strategies.
