Objective O3

Demonstrate the Effectiveness of NbS in Increasing Climate-Resilience of Critical Infrastructure

  • Specific

NATURE-DEMO will validate its methodology for prioritizing NbS (O1) and its digital solution (O2) through specific case scenarios. Five locations within the Alpine biogeographic region have been selected, encompassing diverse infrastructure sectors such as transportation, green infrastructure, and hydropower systems. These demonstrators will address climatic threats including floods, settlement, landslides, and wildfire. The results will validate and refine the project’s methodology and digitally-enabled NbS, facilitating replication in other regions.

  • Measurable

    (KPIs) (Relevant Deliverables: D3.1, D3.2, D3.3, D3.4)

Deploy five NbS monitored to provide quantitative performance and climate-resilience impact assessments.

    • Utilize state-of-the-art methodology for impact assessment tailored to each NbS technology.

    • Achieve >90% progress in the implementation schedule for each demonstrator.

  • Assignable

Demonstrators will be prepared in WP3 and deployed in WP4, led by TUZVO and BOKU, respectively.

  • Realistic

The five demonstrators build on existing collaborations between project partners and local authorities or infrastructure owners. For instance, the demonstrator site in Austria has been a testbed for NbS with over 20 years of historic data, involving collaboration with the Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Regions, and Water Management (BML) and BOKU.

  • Timely

Demonstrators will start early, by month 6 (M6) of the project (WP3), to allow sufficient time for preparation, monitoring, and impact assessment. Deployment will continue in WP4, concluding by month 48 (M48).

Objective O4

Mainstream Nature-Based Solutions for Resilient, Climate-Proof Infrastructure

  • Specific

NATURE-DEMO will promote its methodology (developed in O1 and O2) and real-world success cases (validated in O3) to a broader audience. This involves replicating the best NbS with stakeholders at various preparedness levels. The project will engage additional potential replicators, targeting regions with similar biogeographical characteristics (e.g., Alpine, Mediterranean, Continental). NATURE-DEMO will develop guidelines for incorporating NbS into policy frameworks, adoption strategies, and practical recommendations for pilot projects. A TaskForce will be created to provide expertise and support to infrastructure operators in making NbS-oriented decisions.

  • Measurable

    (KPIs) (Relevant Deliverables: D4.1, D4.2, D5.1, D5.2, D5.3)

Replicate solutions in at least five locations

    • Start at least three replicators within the project's timeframe (fourth year).

    • Produce a guideline document with policy and standardization recommendations.

    • Create a team to sustain project results post-project, co-creating business plans for at least three replicators with local authorities during the fourth year.

  • Assignable

This objective will build on activities from WP1-WP4, with systematic work conducted in WP5, led by UROS.

  • Realistic

NATURE-DEMO has secured engagement from a wide range of stakeholders, who have expressed intent to collaborate (Letters of Support annexed). The project focuses on the Alpine region for demonstrators, with lessons learned to be replicated in other regions. Close collaboration with local authorities and infrastructure owners will enable early commencement of replicators. The TaskForce's expertise will ensure NbS mainstreaming beyond the project's timeframe.

  • Timely

This objective spans the entire project duration and will be consolidated in WP5, starting in month 30 (M30) and ending in month 48 (M48).
