Univerza V Ljubljani

(UL) Slovenia

Institution name: Univerza V Ljubljani, Slovenia
Acronym: UL
Partner coordinator: Matjaž Mikoš
Website: www.uni-lj.si & www.en.fgg.uni-lj.si
Short description

UL is a comprehensive university covering all science disciplines and arts. It is the oldest university in Slovenia (est. 1919), a public institution with more than 40.000 students, organized in 26 faculties and academies – the headquarters are in the center of the City of Ljubljana. UL implements and promotes basic, applied and developmental research and is pursuing excellence and the highest quality as well as the highest ethical criteria in all scientific fields and art.

The mission of the Faculty of Civil and Geodetic Engineering UL (ULFGG is a founding member of UL) is to teach, create new knowledge, and develop innovative solutions in the areas of civil engineering, environmental engineering, and geodesy. In cooperation with the economy and society, it is solving development and professional issues, developing sustainable construction, and co-creating conditions for a healthy and safe environment. For this mission, UL FGG was and is collaborating in numerous national, bilateral, and international research projects worldwide with a focus on the European Union. Its research staff thus gained knowledge, skills, and competencies in the wide research field of integrated water management /governance, including resilient civil engineering & resilient infrastructure.

Currently, we work for diverse EU projects, including BORIS 2, SPONGESSCAPES & DANUBE4all.

Role

ULFGG will contribute its expertise in river engineering and applied hydrology for selection/optimization of NbS in rural and urban environments.

Main Responsibilities: ULFGG will run DEMO 3 site in the Gradaščica River Basin (City of Ljubljana) – its recently constructed part will be monitored and its second part will be designed, executed and monitored.

Key Activities: ULFGG will contribute to the NbS catalogue and its guidelines for floods and landslides, and will be leading Task T3.3 Permits and regulatory compliance that will produce D3.3 Public Procurement Strategy.

Expertise and Resources: ULFGG has excellent knowledge of the Gradaščica River basin, working on its hydrology for years, having several experimental basins/plots in it.

Expected Contributions: ULFGG will run a demo site to test and validate NbS related to river engineering works in the Gradaščica River Basin, addressing flood risk mitigation, hydromorphological conditions, and adaptation related to urban infrastructure.

Collaboration with Partners: The main collaboration will be with the Slovenian Water Agency (Observer—in charge of planned river engineering works, including NbS for flood risk management in the SW part of the City of Ljubljana). ULFGG will collaborate as a potential replicator of NbS and within all WPs.

  • NATURE-DEMO Newsletter no. 8

Our May 2026 newsletter is packed with updates on our efforts to advance nature-based solutions (NbS) for critical infrastructure. As the NATURE-DEMO project reaches its two-year milestone, we reflect on a period of intense collaboration and scientific innovation. With the successful completion of the first three Work Packages (WPs) on April 30th, the project has transitioned from a phase of digital and conceptual framework development into the real-world deployment phase.

  • NATURE-DEMO at two years: Celebrating milestones and launching the next phase in Brașov, Romania

𝐍𝐀𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐄-𝐃𝐄𝐌𝐎 held its bi-annual consortium meeting in Brașov, Romania, between May 18–20, 2026, marking two years since the launch of the project funded by the Horizon Europe Programme and managed by CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency.
